North Maluku – Obi Island Birding 6D5N

Obi Island birding in North Maluku is a true expedition-style experience for adventurous birders exploring the legendary Land of Spices

Tour Overview

This 6 days 4 nights Obi Island Birding trip itinerary focuses on one of Indonesia’s least-visited islands, where pristine forests still shelter a remarkable concentration of localized endemics. Current Obi Island endemics include Moluccan Woodcock, Carunculated Fruit Dove, Red-tinged Myzomela, Obi (Cinnamon-breasted) Whistler, Obi Paradise-kingfisher, Obi Paradise-crow, and Obi Golden Bulbul, making Obi a highly desirable destination for serious birdwatchers targeting North Maluku specialties.

Beyond these confirmed endemics, Obi is also at the forefront of ongoing taxonomic discoveries, with several forms likely to be split into full species in the near future, including an Obi Drongo, Obi Fantail, Obi White-eye, and an undescribed Obi Myzomela, all of which we aim to locate during the tour. Additional highlights include North Moluccan endemics such as Blue-and-white Kingfisher, Violet-necked Lory (Obi race obiensis, proposed as Scaled Lory), Chattering Lory, and North Moluccan Leaf Warbler. Combined with remote landscapes and low visitor numbers, Obi Island offers one of the most exciting and SEO-relevant birding experiences in North Maluku today.
